Mirror Paddle
Root · 0–12 months
About this object
The Mirror Paddle is the first object Evie will ever reach toward — because it reflects the most fascinating thing in her world right now: a face. Yours, and then her own. A simple thing, made with great care, holding an enormous developmental secret.
Materials
FSC maple
Polished stainless mirror
Food-safe finish
Hand-turned
Play ideas — with you
1
Hold the paddle at Evie's eye level, 25–30cm from her face. Let her find it. Watch before you move.
2
Move it very slowly to one side. Pause. Return. Follow her gaze — let her set the tempo.
3
Turn the paddle so your face appears beside hers. Say her name. Notice what changes.
4
Hold it above her during tummy time, just far enough that lifting her head brings it into view.
5
Try it after a feed, when she's calm and alert — that's often when her gaze lingers longest.
How this supports Evie
Social-Emotional
Face-tracking and gaze-holding are the first building blocks of social communication and serve-and-return interaction.
Cognitive & Regulatory
Visual tracking builds sustained attention and early visual-spatial awareness.
Motor
Reaching toward the reflection supports early arm extension and intentional motor reach.
Expression
The sounds and small expressions babies make toward a mirror are some of their earliest attempts to communicate with what they see.
Lullaby Orb
Root · 0–12 months
About this object
A smooth maple sphere with a silent steel bearing inside. When it tilts, something shifts — a soft sound arrives. Evie will learn that her movements have consequences. That she has agency. It's a small, real thing to notice happening.
Materials
FSC maple
Stainless steel bearing
Food-safe oil finish
Play ideas — with you
1
Cup it in both hands. Tilt slowly so Evie can hear the rolling sound. Pause. Let her process.
2
Place it near her hand while she lies on her back. Wait and watch what she does with it.
3
Make the sound, pause, look at Evie. When she makes a sound back, tilt it again. That is the beginning of conversation.
4
Roll it gently along the floor near her and see if she tracks it with her eyes or reaches for it.
5
Use it during a fussy moment — the soft, familiar sound can be a small anchor for both of you.
How this supports Evie
Social-Emotional
Turn-taking with sound is one of the earliest forms of serve-and-return — the foundation of all later communication.
Cognitive & Regulatory
Learning that movement produces sound builds contingency understanding — early cause-and-effect thinking.
Motor
Reaching for the orb, even unsuccessfully, is practice for the arm and hand movements that come later.
Expression
The sounds she makes back at the orb are an early, playful kind of back-and-forth.
Holding Cloth
Root · 0–12 months
About this object
Undyed organic muslin, hand-knotted, soft enough for the earliest weeks. It carries your scent through ritual use. When Evie holds it without you nearby, she is holding something of you. Some parents find that meaningful to notice.
Materials
Organic muslin
Undyed, unbleached
Hand-knotted
GOTS certified
Play ideas — with you
1
Drape it lightly over your face. Pause — one, two, three. Pull it away and say her name with a smile.
2
Let Evie hold one corner while you hold the other. Move it gently. Notice if she pulls toward you.
3
After a ritual session, let Evie hold the cloth near her face. The scent of you travels with it.
4
Let her feel different textures of the cloth against her hands and cheek — folded, bunched, smoothed flat.
5
Use it as part of a wind-down routine, so its scent and feel become part of a calm moment for her.
How this supports Evie
Social-Emotional
Peek-a-boo is a small, repeatable moment of you going away and coming back — something many babies seem to enjoy noticing.
Cognitive & Regulatory
Anticipating the reveal is a small game of expecting something that is briefly out of sight.
Motor
Grasping and holding the cloth is early practice for hand strength and coordination.
Expression
The sounds and faces she makes while holding something familiar are worth noticing too.

Last week
Root · Season One · The Moment
"Your face is the first world
your child has ever known."
In these first weeks, before language, before memory — there is only this: the particular light in your eyes when you look at her.
Step 1
Hold the paddle at Evie's eye level.
Rest Evie on your chest or in your lap, facing you. Hold the Mirror Paddle so the reflective side catches her line of sight — roughly 25–30 cm from her face. Begin with stillness. Let her find it.
What to notice
Does her gaze settle on the mirror, or does she look past it to your face? Both are interesting. Neither is wrong.
Put the phone down.
The rest is yours.
The most important part of the ritual does not involve a screen. Come back when you are ready for The Close.
That was enough.
That was everything.
